DAMAGED • SHIFTED • UNSTABLE IMPORT FREIGHT
Import Freight Arrived Shifted or Damaged? Build the Rework Plan Before Final Delivery.
Broken pallets, shifted cartons and unstable freight can stop a shipment from moving safely to the receiver. Rework, sorting, restacking and repalletizing can create a controlled path from the container or trailer back into deliverable freight. Need help now? Send the freight details and required timing for an RFQ review.
1. Document the Freight Before Handling
Start with photos, piece or pallet counts and the visible condition of the load. Separate known damage from freight that has simply shifted so the handling plan matches the actual problem.
2. Identify What Can Move and What Needs Rework
Some freight may be stable enough to transfer immediately while other pallets or cartons need attention. Creating separate handling lanes can keep good freight moving while exception freight is corrected.
3. Restack or Repalletize Unstable Freight
Collapsed, leaning or broken pallets may need to be rebuilt onto sound pallets, restacked and stretch wrapped before the next carrier or receiver can safely accept them.
4. Sort Damaged Cartons and Exceptions
When cartons are crushed, torn, wet or otherwise compromised, isolate the exceptions from intact product. Follow the shipper or cargo owner’s instructions for disposition rather than making assumptions about product condition.
5. Rebuild the Outbound Delivery Plan
Once the freight is stable, confirm pallet counts, dimensions, destination and pickup timing. The goal is to leave the rework operation with freight that is organized for its next move.
A Shifted Load Is a Freight-Control Problem Before It Becomes a Delivery Problem
Trying to push unstable freight directly to the receiver can create another rejection or handling issue. SwiftDocks can provide a controlled point for inspection support, sorting, restacking, repalletizing, staging and onward movement.
REWORK DECISION GUIDE
What Does the Freight Need Before It Can Move Again?
The condition of the pallets, cartons and load determines whether the operation is a simple restack or a larger exception-handling job.
Restack: Freight Shifted but Packaging Is Intact
When cartons are still usable but the load has shifted, rebuilding the stack and securing it for transportation may be enough to restore a stable outbound unit.
Repalletize: The Original Pallet Failed
Broken, collapsed or unsuitable pallets can require freight to be transferred onto replacement pallets, rebuilt and wrapped before pickup.
Sort & Stage: Some Freight Needs Exception Handling
If only part of the shipment is damaged, separate affected freight from intact product and stage each group according to the cargo owner’s instructions and next destination.

WHEN FREIGHT ARRIVES IN EXCEPTION CONDITION
Three Details That Change the Rework Operation
Rework planning gets much easier when the warehouse knows the condition, cargo type and expected outcome before the truck arrives.
How Much of the Load Is Affected?
One damaged pallet is a different operation from an entire shifted container. Photos and estimated counts help determine space, labor and handling requirements.
What Does the Cargo Owner Want Done?
The warehouse needs clear instructions for damaged or questionable product. Identify what should be restacked, isolated, held or prepared for another destination.
Can the Freight Leave Immediately After Rework?
If the receiver or outbound carrier is not ready, short-term staging may need to follow the rework. Plan the next move before corrected freight starts occupying dock space.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Questions Importers and Freight Teams Ask
Clear answers for the decisions that usually come up when this freight problem is happening in real time.
Can shifted freight be restacked before delivery?
Yes. Depending on the condition of the cargo, freight can be inspected, sorted, restacked, repalletized and wrapped before another delivery attempt.
What should I send when requesting freight rework?
Send photos when available, commodity details, piece or pallet count, weight, current location, equipment type and a description of what shifted or was rejected.
Can damaged freight still be separated from good product?
In many cases, yes. Sorting can separate visibly affected freight from stable product, subject to the customer’s handling instructions and any product-specific requirements.
